Coniston Water Made famous in the Swallows and Amazons books by Arthur Ransome, this lake is approximately 5.6 miles in length (9 kms) and is surrounded by winsome villages. Visitors to Coniston Water can take on the National Trust steam yacht, a ferry that runs the length of the lake or rent a boat. Located on the east shore is Brantwood, the home of the poet, philosopher and painter John Ruskin. Several footpaths surround the lake and venture into the forested area.
